Video(s) of the Day: Top 10 Sportscenter Commercials

2 Comments 30 April 2010

As you may have noticed by now, my family is diehard sports fans (travel to every Tech game, have seen most Baseball stadiums, etc.). When watching ESPN, conversations stop and everyone pays attention to the TV when a new “This is Sportscenter…” commercial comes on. You know the ones: quick, dry, witty commercials usually featuring a combination of sports celebrities (or mascots) and an ESPN personality.

Since 1994, there have been a total of 103 “This is…” commercials. These commercials are so excellent, that a top 10 was truly difficult, and if I were to make this list another day, it could feature completely different commercial.

Without further delay, here is my list:

10. Steve Irwin tackles the Florida Gator

The title explains itself. What could be better than the legendary Steve Irwin confronting a REAL life Florida Gator coming off the elevator? RIP, man, your humor and thrill seeking will forever be missed.

9 (tie): Going Up and Climate Change

Both of these videos have one thing in common: the New Jersey Devil. Going up showcases what happens when you encounter the Devil going DOWN an escalator, while Climate Change shows the epic battle between the Devil and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

8 (tie). Mascot Hilarity: Stanford Tree in Recycle and WKU Dilemma

This video is included for one simple reason: the most hilariously hideous mascot, the Stanford Tree. The smile it gives at the end would give Hannibal Lector the creeps.

Following that one has to be the famous ‘Hilltopper’ of Western Kentucky. Poor guy (or girl??) just wants to use the restroom. Even with poor quality, the mascot’s face is priceless.

7. Chad Johnson Celebration

Chad Johnson has run out of touchdown ideas, so he consults with the famous ESPN anchors to get some help. After a few rejections (“booo-no”), he finally finds inspiration for his next celebration.

6. David Ortiz Betrays the poor Red Sox mascot

A mascot’s worst nightmare: seeing your prized player sign with the hated Yankees. Can’t say I blame him.

5 (tie). Lebron James Commercials: The Chosen One and Stolen Chair

Lebron James has two well-known nicknames: The Chosen One and King James.

4 (tie). Awesome ordering: Brats eating Brats and Arnold Palmer

One of the greatest fan-pleasing traditions in sports, the Milwaukee Brewers Sausage Race, is highlighted in this commercial. Classic.

This commercial is another one showcasing a celebrity ordering their namesake, featuring Arnold Palmer. If you haven’t had a half sweet tea, half lemonade, I can only say one thing: you are missing out! (Also, the alcoholic version, a John Daly, is pretty good as well)

3. Holyfield gets mad at Charley Steiner

Sportscenter fans will always miss the comical, lovable Charley Steiner, who was taken away by the Yankees (surprise, surprise). My alma mater’s mascot, Buzz, unfortunately has a painful meeting with Holyfield.

2. Does D stand for Danica or Dan?

Parking lot mishap when Danica Patrick accidental parks in Dan Patrick’s spot. “Just an honest mistake”

1. Follow me to freedom!

The top pick on this list, without a doubt, has to be the Y2K test commercial. Set right before the new millennium, we see the dramatic results of the ESPN Y2k test. Charley Steiner, yet again, is there for our comedic rescue.

What are your favorite ESPN commercials? I know I left a few hilarious ones out, but it was impossible to crunch this down to only 10 videos.
